Perth. Please suggest sites/plan? I have 7-9 days after a conference in
Australia (Perth) in which I would like to do some Scuba diving in
October 2007. I need to decide whether I fly out of Perth (perhaps try
diving west coast, (?Ningaloo, ?Broome..) and fly out of Perth - or get
an internal flight and fly out of another major airport (Quantas) and go
for diving elsewhere (?Cairns, ?Queensland). Any advice would be
brilliant. Thanks!

Ningaloo Reef.
Ningaloo if you can get there ( pisses on the GBR IMHO ). Rotnest has good
diving ( don't fall off the ferry ) as does the SW corner. Remember
Australia is a bloody big country so you can't just nip over to the GBR for
a quick dive. If you are into tech/cave diving there are some great sites
apparently in WA, not my cup of tea so I have only heard about them

Can't comment on the Ningaloo yet as I won't be diving there until July (six
day trip)
but:-

http://www.diveshed.com.au/index.php
Have a look at the Busselton Jetty dive 10 minutes from their pier. This is
close to where I live.
The wreck dive is good, too, from all reports but I haven't done it.

http://www.perthdiving.com.au/enter.html
I learnt to dive with these guys in 1980 - the dive boat is good. They do
Rottnest (aka Rotto) superbly, which is where I did most of my early dive
years.

Doing a Perth (ex HMAS) dive with these people in June so can't yet comment
on the site but a friend raves about it (we are doing the June dive with her
as she lives in the town)

Ningaloo would be a must, but given that you're already in WA, you could add
any of the others

Not a bad option if you can than fly out of Cairns to your ultimate
destination but iff not it is a long return trip to perth for a day or 2
diving.

As I said in a previous post IMHO Nigaloo is better than GBR in many ways.
Having said that the GBR is awesome and I have dived there heaps more than
Nigaloo

Nigaloo doesn't have the crowds either.

I just came back from WA and would thoroughly recommend diving there. Go up
to exmouth and dive the Nigaloo reef and Murion islands. We dived with
Village Dive while up there who seemed to be pretty good. The navy jetty is
meant to be one of the best dives in the world. It is closed at the moment
but if you're lucky it might be open by oct. They do whale shark tours there
but they seemed to be a bit of a con imo. An absolute MUST is snorkeling
Turquoise bay (my friend described it as the best dive he's ever done which
is a big call seeing it's a snorkel :-). Further down Coral Bay is
definately worth snorkelling. South of perth the Busselton jetty is worth
doing. They have an underwater observatory at the end of the 2k long jetty
so you can look in at the people. Entry to the observatory was $20 but after
diving I'm not sure it is worth doing. The swan wreck is another must imo.
These guys have some good pics http://www.capedive.com/swan.htm but I went
with the dive shed http://www.diveshed.com.au and would happily recommend
them. They will take you inside the wreck if you're an AOW. If you drive up
north try to avoid driving at dusk as there's a BIG risk of hitting wild
animals. If you need in more info let me know.

Michael

I have dived it and was disapointed probably because it was hyped so much.
Great dive but one of the best?

got some good photos so don't know if I was lucky or not. Is a long day for

The guarantee is pretty much non-existant. You have to take the next
available spot which is usually 3 or more days away and you have to take a
spot in the same season. Most people will miss the next available spot
because they have to go home or have something else booked and most won't be
able to come back again within the next few months. So very few people
actually collect on the guarantee. Then they don't tell you to hang on to
that little blue ticket until after you've thrown it out so you have to
spend another $30.

another case of you should have been here/there yesterday last week etc. The
number of dives I've had when people on boats, in dive shops or just down
the bar or beach have said this is amazing. Even when you say how great the
dive was someone seems to say "Yeah you thought was great but you should
have been here ....... "

I've done it twice, once as a night dive. TBH I though Busselton was
better. The viz certainly was and there were a lot of fish about on that
too.
