gday all,

I am about to spend 6 months of my life studying to be a PADI OWSI. Can't
wait.

I have skills in IT and am also studying Japanese in order to create more
opportunity for myself as an instructor.

What are the sort of wages and conditions you can expect in Oz as a OWSI?
What are the common 'perks' (if any!) as in; Do your meals come free and
accomodation as standard, for example?

Looking forward to your replies,

Nathan

An instructor in Australia?

Be prepared to be well and truly screwed.

Hello Nathan

I know of an Australian who qualified as an instructor, left his job and
become a full-time trainer, then three months later went back to his old job
because he could not pay the bills with the money he was making. This may
not the case for all people, but all the instructors I've met do not make
large money. What about continuing as an IT person and instructing on the
side...lots of free diving and all the other perks.

Best of luck with it, whichever way you decide.

Stay in IT, there are only a few places in the world where a scuba
instructor can earn some money.
Those are mostly small island where one gets bored after a few weeks and
only then starts the money earning.
That was some years ago on the Maldives about 1000-1200 US$ a month
including tips and bonus plus room and food. For 6 days a week at least 10
hours a day. The same time in Egypt the payed half off that. However this is
mostly tax free, you have to pay for you're own insurances, travel, padi
fees etc.
But that all might have changed for the better by now! As there has been an
enormous growed in the amount off scuba instructors world wide.
