Yeah, Pope's would be a good snorkel site, especially
the sponge garden under the gannet platform...
Popes is a horseshoe shaped annulus, with an internal
depth of 2 meters or so, dropping away to 12-13 on
the outside. "Inside" means within the horseshoe itself.

Mornington pier would definitely be worh a look, as
would Rye or Portsea piers and perhaps even Flinders
The cliffs along the esplanade between Mount Martha
and Safety Beach can also be good at times.
If you have access to a boat, South Channel fort may
be worth a look, and the J sub out near Swan Island?
Which is coincidentally on top of another wreck, the
SS. Hersey.
Ian Lewis' book 'Shore Dives of Victoria" might be
worth hunting down, it's probably a little dated now,
but would certainly give you a few ideas...

Post by Hi-Softah great, I've been hearing about Popes Eye...when you say "inside" does
that mean in the semi circle part...which i believe is nice and
shallow..ish... ? My next question wouldhave been how to get out
there...so thanks for that...I'll just book in through the dive shop there
then...
...and Mornington pier isn't too far away...so that could be great for a
quick dip...I'll check that out too... I also heard that Beaumaris is really
good too....I think it has to be high tide for that though...
thanks...can't wait to go now :)
cheers,
Hi-Soft
Post by Hi-SoftHey I'm relatively new to Snorkeling ( though I'm 44)...and was looking
for some info on spots around Vic to start off ( I'm located 8km east of
the city )..
i recently has a go at Portsea in the rock pools near "London Bridge" and
loved it so much..I'm hooked...and have purchased some nice fins, mask,
suit etc.. and roaring to go again..
Any advide in general would be most appreciated...
cheers,
Hi-Soft
Popes Eye (inside) is great when the tide is right. Ask about snorkelling
there at the Portsea dive shops. (You need to go by boat, easiest to go on
one of theirs)
There is also some great snorkelling just around from Mornington pier,
towards bird rock beach. This is accessible from shore.

Tom
