Does anyone know of any good dives around melbourne that don't require a
boat to get to? I'm starting to feel the pinch of doing too many boat dives
in a weekend :-) What I usually do it a couple of boat dives and then a
couple of pier dives but I'm keen on doing something more exotic but free.

Thanks in advance

How close to Melb itself?
Are you thinking the Yarra, or prepared to travel a bit?

Travel is ok but generally I go for a weekend or single day so would prefer
to travel no more than 2 or 3 hours tops.

I've heard queenscliffe is supposed to have some great dives. Not sure if
they're shore or note.

Well, start at the heads and work north from there!

There's the usual piers, Portsea, Flinders, Rye, Mornington, all
worth a look if you haven't dived them. The Mt Martha cliffs can
be ok, I've found sea horses at Point Linley near Mornington.
Point Franklin at Portsea would be shore-diveable, but could be
a bit of a snorkel out (be very careful of boats there, tow a flag
and probably a slackwater only dive if you don't have a boat
tailing you.) Then there's the back beaches if you are up to it.

A guy named Ian Lewis wrote a book called "Shore Dives of
Victoria", which is definitely worth a look at. I bought a copy
years ago, and it wasn't an expensive book.

Hope that helps,

Mick G

Thanks mick that's good info. I had a bit of trouble finding the book as
it's out of print but I managed to find a shop that still had one. They gave
me the option of normal post for $1 or express for $4, so I should have it
tomorrow :-)

Michael,

Did this shop have any more of these books in store? If so, can you tell me
where you bought the book from?

Thanks

Adam.

Details are below, I didn't want to post them here until the book turned up.
Their service wasn't too good, I phoned them a week ago and paid a little
extra to have it express posted but they didn't send it out for 3 days
despite promising to send it out the day I ordered it (which really defeats
the purpose of express post :-). I've got it now which is the main thing.
